Sam Beadle headed up the Stevenage Borough ‘A’ team during the 1978-9 campaign; one where there were two Boro’s fighting the cause. What do we mean? Well, the decision that season was to field two sides. One would be the ‘A’ side in the Chiltern Premier League on Saturdays under Beadle’s leadership. A second team would then play on Sundays in the Chiltern Youth League under John Aldrin. As far as the ‘A’ team goes, Beadle transformed things. By the end of October 1978, the squad was pretty much unrecognisable from the previous season. Many of the new recruits had come in from the gaffer’s old club – Cygnet Rovers. And many of them kept playing for both; Cygnet being a Sunday League side.
