Highfield
Unless we’re mistaken, Highfield are the Waltham Abbey-based side we played in a Herts Intermediate Cup tie back in October 1979. Well, we say October. But we needed a replay to get past them and that took us into November too. This is very much by the by, though. As far as we can tell, the club is no more; last said to be active in the 1983-4 campaign. It’s entirely possible they continue on today under the radar as a junior or intermediate club. But we haven’t dug up any evidence to suggest that to be the case. Do you know more? Why not tell us?

Club History
Who are Highfield?
So, the story starts for this football club back in 1945. That’s what Wikipedia tells us, anyway. And, actually, it feels as if the tale is a patchy one. Joining the Enfield Alliance League to start with, the next chapter we find is nearly 20 years later; the club popping up in the London League. The next reference point we have is 1971, when they joined the Metropolitan-London League. In between those years? We guess they were still in the London League?
Now, 1976 is obviously the year that Boro’ formed. But it’s also the year that Highfield joined the London Spartan League. It was in this competition they’d see out the rest of their days. That’d be eight seasons’ worth of days, if you’re counting. While a senior side for this purpose, we’d meet them in the Herts Intermediate Cup. To be frank, we’ve taken a leap and assumed these are one and the same club.
Maybe we’ve taken too much of a liberty with Waltham Abbey being, y’know, Essex? But surely there couldn’t be TWO sides called Highfield in such a small area? Could there? No doubt someone out there will tell us…
