Biography

Our seventh addition to the ranks in summer 2026 was winger Ben Broggio; signing on loan from Birmingham’s premier football club – Aston Villa. The highly-regarded player came in at a time when we’d made a less-than-ideal start to the 2026-27 campaign. But our struggles in front of goal pre-dated that comfortably. And it’s not like we hadn’t been active in that particular department during the transfer window. Broggio was not the first attacker we’d brought into the fold. Mind you, the sense was that our unit in attacking needed more vitality. And Broggio was the lad to help provide it.

Not sure if it’s fair to say that our success rate and even general approach to loanees hadn’t been great in the preceding years. The lot of a young player coming in with buckets of kudos from a Premier League is not an easy one. Broggio’s pedigree wasn’t one to be sniffed at, however. Five goals and picked up two assists in 17 appearances on loan at Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership is an excellent indication of what the lad could bring to us. Replicating it in a less-than-sedate league such as League One is, of course, a matter for debate. But the optimism on his arrival was merited.

Broggio had been on the books at Villa from an early age, turning pro in February 2024. He’d also earned England recognition at U15, U16, and U18 level.
