A new arrival at the end of the summer 2019 transfer window, Elliott List came into a Boro’ squad making a slow start to the season. A long injury list was doing its bit to keep any aims of a strong start to the 2019-20 League Two campaign in check. But, in signing List, came a player who had no shortage of first team experience; himself racking up almost half a century of League One outings for Gillingham the season before. And it would turn out to be the start of a six-year spell at the Lamex; one that wasn’t without its twists and turns.
“We didn’t want to lose Elliott” was the opinion of Gills boss Steve Evans at the time of his switch to the Lamex. It boded well for us to get a player who seemed to have a future in Kent. At the age of 22, however, starting each and every game became a real ambition for him. It was with us he saw that being the case and straight into the team he went. It looked a shrewd move in the early days, but injury would become an issue. A long-term layoff during his stay meant that just 137 starts and 64 sub appearances were accumulated in his time at the club.
By summer 2025, List was down the pecking order and you could say that some of his pace had faded. Boro’ were said to have offered terms to retain him, but presumably the prospect of playing second fiddle to other players in the squad didn’t appeal. It was at that juncture that List opted to pen a deal up the road at Northampton Town. In doing so, he left us as one of a few players to pass the 200-appearance mark for Boro’. And, in the modern game, many would say that’s no mean feat. And it definitely spelled the end of an era as List moved on.
Elliott List: Before Boro’
List started his career at Premier League side Crystal Palace, before moving to the Gills in 2015. In the early stages of his time at Priestfield, it was out on loan that he got his first taste of senior football. It was at Braintree Town, if you wanted to know. It wasn’t ’til after the one-month deal, however, that List got his chance to shine in League One. He made his debut for the Kent side on Boxing Day 2015.
