Boro' manager Darren Sarll didn't hang about after the 2016-7 League Two season came to an end. After launching his summer recruitment drive with the signature of forward Alex Samuel, midfielder James Ferry was not far behind after the club reached agreement with Brentford.

A member of the Bees' B team, Ferry's first encounter with Boro' came in a reserve team match. The central midfielder impressed enough to earn the chance to train with Stevenage, before being allowed to spend the rest of the 2016-7 campaign at the Lamex on an extended trial basis.

Ferry's switch to Boro' became permanent in May 2017 after the clubs came to an undisclosed agreement. Like fellow summer signing Samuel, it gave the impression that Sarll had earmarked his targets early and wanted to get deals over the line before other clubs started sniffing around.

A bright, young player by Sarll's admission, Ferry joined a Boro' squad brimming with talented youngsters. With the club looking to lay down solid foundations for the future, the zeal and energy that Ferry brought offered a real zip in the centre of the park for Stevenage.
