Looking at their name alone, Wokingham Town are perilously close to being associated with the guys we love to hate from Surrey. But we should stress that no connection exists between either side; the Satsumas hailing from Berkshire for a start. And it’s no longer a club that exists in its own right either. A merger with Emmbrook Sports created a new team in summer 2004, which means are exploits during the 1992-3 and 1993-4 Diadora League Premier Division campaigns will forever be the extent of our time together.

Wokingham Town: The Facts

Who are Wokingham Town?

The story of the Satsumas goes back to 1875. But we can’t profess to know too much about the path they took until the mid-1950s at earliest. At this point in time, the team joined the Metropolitan League; moving onto the Delphian, Corinthian, and Athenian Leagues between 1957 and 1963. One further step took them into the Isthmian League in 1973. And, all the while, the club never really set things alight. In finishing third position in the 1962-3 Corinthian League, they recorded their highest league placing of that era.

Still, life in the Isthmian League would see an improvement in fortunes. The 1981-2 season would deliver a promotion to the Premier Division as champions of Division One. The next season saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup for the first time. And the 1987-8 season took them all the way to the FA Trophy semi-finals. More importantly, they maintained their Premier Division status through into the 1990s, which is why we would eventually come to meet them in competitive action.

It wouldn’t last, however. In 1995, the club were relegated to Division One and – three years later – down to Division Two. Even worse was the sale of their Finchampstead Road home to raise cash, which forced them out in 1999. A further two years down the line and they were relegated again to Division Three. All the while, they were moving around in and out of various ground-share agreements to fulfil their home fixtures. It’d be 2004 when the merger to become Wokingham & Emmbrook ended this particular story.
