Capital One Cup Draw: Ipswich Town (Away)

So, Ipswich Town are to be our first round opponents thanks to the Capital One Cup draw; the Tractor Boys one of just two sides to lose to us in the nation’s second-most prestigious cup competition. To date, at least. Us beating them in a two-goal victory came at the start of a campaign we finished rock bottom of League One. Jordan Burrow scored. How about that, eh? We know. Hard to believe.

Long before Game of Thrones bumped off your favourite character in the season finale, cup draws were often the best way of building you up buttercup just to let you down. If it wasn’t Darlington or Yeovil Town on the road, it was Notts County or Hastings United indoors. And the early rounds of the Capital One Cup aren’t exactly full of star potential…

But this one isn’t a bad ‘un, all things considered.

Capital One Cup draw: Ipswich Town away

After a win last time round, this tie is going to be a bit different. Well, likely to be.

For a start, Portman Road is a brand new ground for us to visit. Under Mick McCarthy, Suffolk’s finest are coming back strong too. But we won’t mention that bitter rivals Norwich City dumped them out of the 2014-5 Championship playoffs as the Canaries surged towards their own personal Premier League return.

In fact, Ipswich are the second-highest ranked team in our section of the draw. That’s if we go by last season’s placings, of course. The potential for a cupset, then, is probably so low you can’t get under it and our odds longer than a piece of string. But – two months out – a new season and new era are now taking shape. It starts with this ol’Capital One cup draw. And that’s gotta be worth something.
