Scunthorpe United: It’s That Team Again…

By Pete H

Hard to believe that it’s two weeks since we were last in league action. And we’re coming back home the Lamex to get back at it The heady cocktail of cup adventures (however unsuccessful they’ve proven to be) and the high winds that blew Prenton Park away means we’re almost in danger of forgetting what this League Two lark is all about. Never mind though. We’re sure it’ll come flooding back as we welcome the Iron over our threshold for a midweek winter warmer.

Stevenage v Scunthorpe United

Lamex Stadium, Stevenage — 07 December 2021 — Sky Bet League Two

In the most recent of times, Boro’ can reflect on a solid record against the Iron. Our two games last season took place this side of the New Year; a 3-1 home win getting our 2021 off to a great start on 02 January 2021, before a 1-0 win at Glanford Park near the back end of term (08 May 2021) saw us claim a first-ever victory on their patch. Even in our troubled 2019-20 season, we didn’t lose to them. A 0-0 draw at theirs on 02 November 2019 was all we managed, however, with Covid-19 accounting for the return fixture at the Lamex.

A match made in League One

Both ourselves and the Iron can probably look at our recent meetings and suggest they were a far cry from when we first met. And that came back on 01 October 2011 as Boro’ slumped to a home defeat; the Iron scoring in first and second half stoppage time, before Josh Walker got us on the board even later on. And it took a late Darius leveller on 21 January 2012 to ensure we weren’t completely wiped out against them that season; Boro’ snatching a 1-1 draw at theirs.

The end of the 2012-3 season actually saw the Iron relegated from League One – a year before we suffered the same fate. In trading 1-0 home wins (us on 06 October 2012 and them on 26 February 2013), there’s nothing much remarkable to say. By the time the Iron returned back into League One, however, we were heading in the opposite direction. And it’d end up being a six-and-a-half-year wait until our paths crossed again when the Iron were again relegated.
