A man walks down the street. He says: “Why am I soft in the middle now? Why am I soft in the middle?”. From this, we’re safe to assume Paul Simon ain’t waffling on about a Boro’ fan. If nothing else, recent showings from Charlie Lee and Steven Schumacher tell us that we’re anything but soft in the middle. And that’s probably just as well, because this weekend’s outing could well be the hardest test left end of term. Colchester United are hosting a little afternoon tea, and we have an invitation to be there. Or obliged. It’s one or the other, y’know.
Boro’ are brimming with confidence at the moment, but there’s still a fair amount of work to do. The playoffs are the lock-in after League Two’s last orders, yet we could still be chucked out at closing time. Meanwhile, the U’s are close to having a taxi called for ’em. Five points behind of an admittedly out-of-sorts Carlisle in seventh place, the Essex outfit are just about keeping their slim hopes alive. It’s not that unlike our pursuit of Pompey. And what better motivation (for them) is knowing they’ve won our last five meetings. Five! Hoyven Glaven!
Colchester United v Stevenage: Bonedigger
Let’s not dwell on the past, however. We’re here to create a brand new tomorrow for our children and our children’s children. And our children’s children’s children. Until Wednesday. The point we’re trying to make is that our past record is not what ought to spook us going into this one. Rather, it’s their rather dashing home form this season. Nursing an average of two points per game indoors, only Donny-on-the-Wold can speak of better. 67% of Col U’s entire League Two stock has been plundered at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
There is a silver lining to this particular cloud. The U’s aren’t infallible at home, not by a long stretch. How can they be when they shipped three goals at home to Leyton Orient! In more recent times, Pompey left Essex a week before coming to us with a four-goal haul. If we live up to our “current form” and not our “current form against Colchester”, there’s nothing technically standing in the way of us “doing this”. At the very least, it’ll set us up for an Easter double-header that’ll be the defining moment of our season. Eggscellent! (Too early? Ed.)

Colchester United v Stevenage: FIFA 17 Verdict
Cor! Can you Adam and Eve, Steve and indeed Niamh it? Back in the saddle, it took a mere 43 game minutes to shake off the rust and get back into the swing of things. Now, we’re creatures of habit here at BoroGuide HQ. That would explain why Matt Godden (twice) and Josh McQuoid scored carbon copy nod-ins from six yards. Not Tom Pett (above), however. No, he decided to use feet of all things. C’mon. What do you think this is? Football? No, it’s the FIFA 17 Verdict and it will not end Colchester 0-4 Stevenage this weekend. Stupid FIFA.
