Love Thy Neighbour, Etc.

Alright, what’s occurring?

You catch us in the middle of our search for the League Two reset button. This new season is already three matches deep, not that we’ve started it with much aplomb. Just the one, lonely point has come from our opening exchanges, though this is a race with plenty left to run to be fair. After what is a now-annual three-goal August tanking at Orient, we return indoors this weekend. It’s just a shame we’re throwing a welcome party to those rascals from Luton. As long as we don’t offer up three points with the hors d’oeuvres.

For the 357th season in succession, this is the Hatters’ year. Our chums from down the A505 are setting the pace atop the division as we speak. Mind you, the only thing that sets them apart from Colchester, Mansfield and – uh – Crawley is their goal difference. It can be difficult to separate teams apart at this stage of the season, much like trying to compare the best online casino offers. But you’ll be in no doubt if you speak to a Luton fan: they’re top and it says so in black and white. If they’re still there after another 43 games, so be it…

So, Boro’ have won a quarter of their battles with Luton. That equates to two out of eight, if you were wondering. Both of those glorious victories came in some poor love’s Bedfordshire backyard. The best we’ve managed against the Hatters on our own turf was last season’s cracker of a nil-all affair. At this point, we have to admit we’re just grabbing numbers from wherever we can. That bit about it being early days this term? Yeah, it means there’s not much to guide us. What is it that makes us likely to lose this game? Or win it? Or…

Stoke is on the horizon too. Is that going to influence who plays and who doesn’t? Unlikely – we’re banking on the boss to pick his strongest 11. If, indeed, we know exactly what that is at the moment. Do you bring Dale Gorman into the middle? Who plays up top? And will Dean Wells come back to the party this weekend? If, buts and maybes are a delightful part of football – though how Robbie Savage has made a television career out of it, we’ll never know. We’re digressing once again – but then, why go and change a habit of a lifetime.

The bookies? We’re out as far as 21/10 at time of writing, though 2/1 has been a more common price on a Boro’ triumph. We’d tell you how Luton are shaping up on the board but we don’t really want to encourage them any more than we have to. After all, the Kenilworth Road Betamax player was probably fed our Tuesday night showing this week. You know there is something lurking in the Boro’ locker, however. And there are matches in which to dig it out and there are also matches – the latter is what we have here. So, let’s have it…
