On The Buses: Three Points

Yep, it’s a saying that’s done the rounds so many times that you might as well call it Ernie and shove it behind the wheel of a milk float. You’re kept waiting for bloody ages for three points and then you double your money in as many games. We have clocked up six points from a possible six – not exactly the the club’s finest ever hour, but you wouldn’t slam the door on it…

Three Points Times Two

Stevenage Football Club have won two games on the spin for the first time since the end of November. And yes, that’s 2015 – if you were in any doubt. You wouldn’t know it to look at the League Two table, given that we’ve moved neither up nor down from 19th spot in the division since we set up camp to admire the views after our Boxing Day defeat to Crawley Town.

If history repeats itself for a second time this season, we’ll follow up our two recent victories with a defeat, a win and a draw from our next three outings. And, do you know what, there’s a bloody good chance of that happening looking at the fixtures on the horizon: Carlisle United (A), Exeter City (H) and Portsmouth (H). It’s all a little bit of history repeating…

First up is the long trip north to Carlisle, a team who are in very decent nick for a side who have played home matches at all 361 grounds north of the Watford Gap since being flooded out of Brunton Park. We won’t go into too much detail right now – that’s what our match preview will tackle – but this will be arguably Darren Sarll’s toughest task since taking charge.

After that, Exeter are more or less bang average this term and Portsmouth have naffed up their promotion hopes just a little bit in recent times but still have a playoff place to cling on to. Now we know football delivers unpredictable fortunes like you might get at Casinos with Dracula slots, but think about it: a defeat, a win, a draw. And then say it ain’t (going to be) so.

If we can blag yet another three points in one, more or fewer of our next three fixtures, we actually stand a chance of ending the siege that’s oddly kept us in the same league position for over a month come rain or shine or storm. What is certain from the last two victories is that we can stop looking back so nervously and start eyeing up Barnet and Luton once more. Superb.
