Hmmm. That didn’t go very well, did it? The anticipated return of Graham Westley with his Preston North End charges was an opportunity for us to show him how we’ve moved on since he decided to leave us for the sunnier climes of Lancashire earlier this year. Maybe it was destiny taking over. Maybe not. But the 1-4 scoreline smarts like a particularly violent paper cut.
It is, obviously, the second home game on the spin in which we’ve conceded four goals at Fortress Lamex. The second half of that sentence is threatening to become an oxymoron – how did it end up that we found ourselves unable to defend at home? Mind you, given the reality of the situation – non-league Stevenage in League One – the odd pasting has been about three years overdue.
The result is neither ideal for Graham Westley reasons, nor perfect preparations for what will be a difficult trip to Sheffield United. Promoted last season after a landmark win over Boro’ at Bramall Lane, it is likely that the Blades will be playing a 4-4-2 formation with an extra 10,548 men flooding the midfield. This will make it tough to create chances and even leave the changing rooms. This concerns us a lot.
