The word “defeat” hasn’t exactly been in our vocabulary this season. Aside from cup exits at the hands of Southampton and Dagenham and Redbridge, it’s been a bountiful start to the League One campaign. The fact is this: it has taken us until midway through the third month of 2012-13 for someone to a) stop us scoring and b) stop us getting anything in the points column. Formidable.

It isn’t a catastrophe, nor a disaster. It is annoying and turned us into petulant kids for an  impermanent amount of time on Saturday evening. But it ends any lingering thoughts we might be able to remain unbeaten until May and will now enable us to see how this squad of players reacts following adversity. It might also just make a case for Dani Lopez to play at least some of the next game.

If Bondz N’Gala had blagged that equaliser late on, it’d have been a bad thing. We’d have come away from Colchester with a point and renewed, yet misplaced sense of infallibility. The Us might just have done us favour; now we can go at MK Dons with the desire to get things back on track sooner rather than later. Especially given the testing run of fixtures on the horizon.

Oh, and bravo Sanchez Watt. During the first watch of the highlights, you had us fooled…
