For the first time since promotion from the Blue Square Premier in 2010, the 2017-8 League Two campaign was the fourth season on the spin that Boro’ had competed at the same level. Of course, two of the three preceding seasons had raised hopes of promotion and a return to League One.
After a disappointing end to the 2016-7 campaign, Darren Sarll‘s men were looking to build on some solid foundations and put themselves in the promotion frame come May 2018. The start was fairly solid, to be fair, but things went south as the weather turned colder. Suddenly, Boro’ were looking over their shoulders.
A few big wins here and there wasn’t enough for Sarll to keep his job, and in came Dino Maamria after sterling work at Nuneaton Town to steady the ship in National League North; Boro’ finishing comfortably safe, but well off the pace they would have very much hoped to have kept early doors. Nonetheless, you could well say key lessons had been learned over the course of the campaign.
