Another new face in the 2009/10 close season, Peter Winn was brought in to bolster the ranks in time for Boro's first season in the Football League; the signing announced less than a week after the capture of Darius Charles from Ebbsfleet United.
Winn learned his trade coming through the youth ranks at Scunthorpe United where he was named as the club's young player of the year dduring the 2006/07 season. His first team debut was a starting appearance in a 2-1 win over Bradford City in late 2006.
However, Winn failed to impress his bosses and was touted around a number of non-league sides, registering interest from Mansfield Town. The winger also trialled for York City and had loan spells at Northwich Victoria and Barrow before settling on loan for the 2009/10 season with Gateshead.
Winn scored in both of his first two games for the club, with his total scoring record at Gateshead reading five goals in 27 appearances. Returning to Scunthorpe United at the end of the 2009/10 season, Winn found himself released as a free agent until Graham Westley made his interest known.
It prompted Winn to turn down a contract with Gateshead in favour of a return to the Football League, with Boro' providing an opportunity for the player to show Scunthorpe United what they'd forfeited.
