Gary Williams made an immediate impression by scoring on his debut in the Letchworth 'derby' game. He was signed in December 1988 from Vauxhall Motors and it was Boro' coach Paul Peterson who introduced him to Motors' first-team line-up during his season in charge at the Luton-based club.
