Dean spent two years with Cambridge United as a youngster making one league appearance before joining St Albans in 1989. After making eleven appearances for City he moved onto Hemel Hempstead and Wokingham. Rejoined St Albans before Brentford bought him for £15,000. They then released him after he picked up an injury. He trained at Wycombe and Northampton, who offered him a contract, but approached Boro with a view to signing. Unable to settle at the club, he left at the end of his first and only season.
