Arguably one of the most iconic figures to have graced Broadhall Way, not since the temporary stay of Ray Houghton had Boro' made a signing of such magnitude, with the former Newcastle and Sunderland goalkeeper Lionel Perez joining as a rival to Mark Westhead.

Perez' early career is a certainly impressive one, having originated at Bordeaux, as did the mercurial Jean-Michel Sigere, before moving to the North East to play for both Geordies and Mackems.

Despite a step down to play for Cambridge United and Scunthorpe United, the experienced goalkeeper had plenty of energy left to provide some of that French flair that left when Siggy departed.

After what proved to be a career-ending injury sustained in a collision with ex-Boro' hero Giuliano Grazioli against Barnet, Perez joined the Boro' coaching staff and had one more moment of infamy against Northampton Town in the FA Cup by appearing to prod one of his Cobblers' counterparts in the eye region. It was enough to get Match of the Day 2's notice...
