Rodney McAree

Date of Birth: 19-08-1974

Place of Birth: Dungannon (NIR)

Rodney McAree arrived at Broadhall Way in September 1998; the Northern Irish midfielder offered a contract, but choosing (it seems) not to sign. He played three games for us while on a trial period. He clearly did enough to impress boss Paul Fairclough too. But any hope we had of keeping the lad disappeared in mid-October; a matchday programme explaining how McAree had been “offered terms…but failed to contact the club with his reply”.

Rodney McAree: Before Boro’

Boro’ was McAree’s first port of call after departing Fulham, it’d seem. At Craven Cottage, he became a cult hero after a last-gasp goal away to Carlisle set the Cottagers on course for promotion from the old Division Three. The stats place him at Fulham for four seasons; joining the London side after a spell at Bristol City. Before that, he was on the books with Premier League giants Liverpool; the midfielder turning pro while at Anfield.

Rodney McAree: After Boro’

After seemingly snubbing our offer of a contract, it seems that McAree wound up down at Crawley Town. Not long after, however, he went back to his native Northern Ireland. Still playing, he turned out at Glenavon and Dungannon Swifts; going on to take charge at the latter in 2011. Over the next seven years, he was involved at the Swifts in some capacity. In 2018, Coleraine made him gaffer – a spell that’d end in May 2019 by mutual consent.
