Stimson was one of the most highly regarded Conference managers after nearly leading Grays Athletic to two successive promotions, first to the Nationwide Conference and then nearly to the Football League. Following defeat at the first hurdle in the 2005/6 playoffs, Stimson left his Grays post by mutual consent.

Despite a plethora of league clubs wanting his services following his departure from Grays, the Stevenage Borough board knew there was just one man they wanted to replace the outgoing Graham Westley. With a fondness for attractive attacking football drawing plaudits from many neutral spectators, plus being relatively young, there was no reason why Stimmo couldn't be the man to lead Boro' to the Football League.

But, as league managers lost their jobs during the 2007/8 season, Stimson became hot property. Phil Wallace's refusal to grant permission for clubs to talk to Stimson led to the former Grays man resigning later to take the reigns at Gillingham. In his time, however, he did earn Boro' their first major honour in a decade plus the honour of being the first team to win a cup final at the new Wembley Stadium through the FA Trophy.
