John Dreyer, in his caretaker manager role, moved to sign Mustoe from Dr Martens League highflyers, Gloucester City in January 2003 in order to bolster his midfield for the ensuing relegation battle.

Mustoe came with a lot of experience, having started as a trainee at Manchester United, moving to Cambridge United before eventually settling in Gloucester. However, his league ambitions would not be satisfied outside the Conference, and he joined his former Cambridge acquaintances, Dreyer and David Preece.

The timing of his arrival could not have been more ill-fated, as only days later Graham Westley arrived, and his participation was limited to 25 minutes of on-the-field play.

His efforts were noted though, and he will be remembered best for a fantastic crunching tackle with his first touch in a Boro' shirt, and also for supplying Simon Wormull with the pass to score the consolation goal in the 2-1 loss away to Gravesend.
