A tenacious, tough-tackling midfielder, the arrival of Darren Murphy during the 2008/9 campaign added some steel and bite at a time when it was most sought. Opinion may have been divided over his performances since his arrival, but there can be no disputing that the role Murphy plays is a crucial one to the success of the team as a whole.
The midfielder's perceived lack of discipline at times comes as an occupational hazard for a player of his type (although the red card against Cambridge United in the playoffs ranks as one of the greatest officiating farces in football history).
And so onto Murphy's first full season at Broadhall Way - Graham Westley turned to Murphy to act as his midfield strong-man and free up other midfielders to press forward in attack. An under-appreciated and unglamorous role on the football field, the role was nonetheless integral to Boro's promotion push.
That is applied regardless of the fact that, at times, Murphy was left to play a periphery role - a sign that competition for places was intense as Boro' pushed towards the business end.
After scoring against Portsmouth in Boro's first ever Carling Cup outing in 2010, Murphy suffered a broken leg and spent most of the season out injured. But he returned towards the end of the campaign and put some vital shifts in to keep Boro' on track.
