Signed for £9,000 by Paul Fairclough from Hayes in 1997, defender Warren Kelly was appointed team captain in the wake of Paul Barrowcliff's move to Brentford. However, the player did not enjoy a particularly happy start to life at the club.
As the management attempted to work out the most productive defensive line-up, Kelly fell victim to the axe in 1998 and moved onto Rushden and Diamonds on loan. The deal was made permanent shortly after, with perhaps some supporters not too disheartened by how events turned out.
