Alan Julian made what some might describe as a surprise return to Stevenage in summer 2011, after being permitted to leave Gillingham. It was the Kent club that the Northern Ireland stopper had opted to join from Boro' three years previously in order to follow former manager Mark Stimson.
In bringing the goalkeeper back to the Lamex Stadium, manager Graham Westley secured Julian's services for the second time. It was Westley who had initially brought the player to the club in February 2005 - a move that helped push Boro' forward on the path to the 2004/5 Conference playoff final.
It has been suggested that coach Lionel Perez had played a role in recruiting Julian from Brentford. Whoever made the call, however, it was to be inspired. Julian is an agile keeper with excellent reactions and is not afraid to make some crucial saves.
The goalkeeper was named Supporters' Association Player of the Year for 2005/6 after continuing his strong form into his first full season with the club, and bailed Boro' out of a tight spot on a number of occasions. More consistent displays followed in 2006/7 and 2007/8, before he left.
Julian departed Stevenage for a second time in summer 2012.
