The versatile defender found himself being switched between centre-back and right-back throughout the 2004/5 season, and usually the player found himself playing in the right back berth where he featured prominently in the run up to the Conference playoff final in 2005. However, the 2005/6 season proved to be less enjoyable for the former Boston United man.
Michael Warner regained favour in the right back role, although Hocking was not helped by injury, but the departure of a defender who became a fans favourite during his stay was all but inevitable when a fully-fit Hocking was left out even when Boro's defensive options were limited. Rumours persist that Hocking was dropped until he got his hair cut, but whatever the reasons, it was sad to see him go. After a spell at Fisher Athletic, the defender stepped into Blue Square North with Southport in 2007.
