The second signing for manager Graham Westley in the 2009/10 close season came in the shape of defender Luke Foster, who signed as a free agent having been released after a season by Mansfield Town.

Following spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Lincoln City, York City and Stalybridge Celtic, Foster signed and settled at Oxford United in 2007, where his performance count fell just one match short of 100.

At the end 2007/8 season, Foster was named supporters' and players' player of the year in a season that saw him make 35 appearances for the club and earn a standby call up to the England C team.

While primarily a defender, Foster has experience of playing in the midfield holding role after making a number of appearances there for Lincoln City earlier in his career. It was a role that the player was increasingly deployed in his first season at Stevenage.

Foster's signature came at a time when Boro' were aiming to bolster their ranks heading into their first season of Football League competition. The experience he gathered during his time in the lower Football League and the top end of non-league football means that demand for his services was not sporadic.

A red card towards the end of the season saw Foster miss out on the successful npower League Two playoff campaign, but his contribution to the side over the course of the campaign did not go unrecognised.

However, it was announced that the midfielder was moving north to join Rotherham United and brought his career at the Lamex Stadium to an end after just one campaign with the Hertfordshire club.
