Debut: vs Hayes (A), 21/08/2001
One week into the 2001/2 season, it was probably in the minds of most Boro' fans that DJ Campbell would be the goal-bagger that had been lacking inbetween Hayles and Alford, and again since Alford's departure. Having headlined during the PSF's, he picked up two goals away to Hayes, but early-season injury saw him restricted to six games before November, and only 21 for the full season.
Many saw 2002/3 as DJ's make-or-break season - unfortunately it turned out to be the latter. A public spat with then manager Wayne Turner saw him loaned out to a number of sides ahead of a permanent move to Yeading Town. DJ's impact at Broadhall Way will not be forgotten however, as the nippy but lightweight striker grabbed the all important winner in the FA Trophy quarter final at home to Stalybridge, and also in the semi-final second leg at home to Morecambe.
Campbell may not have been one earmarked for greater things a few years back, but any critics have been more than proved wrong. After his initial descent to lower league teams, the striker's career curve - and stock - has risen expontentially. He eventually found his way to Blackpool under Ian Holloway, a move that took the player to the heights of the Premier League in 2010/1.
