Chris Beardsley joined Stevenage Borough in the summer of 2009 on a free transfer after he was released by Kettering Town, where he failed to set the world alight. Manager Graham Westley took a bit of a gamble of a striker who had yet to truly find his feet despite having been at a number of clubs during his career.

A lack of goalscoring pedigree didn't inspire much confidence in the Boro' faithful to begin with, but Beardsley took the opportunity to finally make a name for himself after a series of false starts. While goals remained at a premium, Beardsley eventually established himself in the first team with a series of highly impressive and tenacious displays.

Never afraid of ruffling the feathers of defenders throughout the league, Beardsley put the legwork in to enable others to flourish around him. Although goalscoring was arguably seen a second string to his bow, to finish with 10 goals in the 2009/10 title-winning season is no mean feat.

The step up to the Football League brought fewer opportunities than previously afforded, but Beardsley was never going to be shy of taking chances when available. Indeed, his perserverance was rewarded with a goal at Accrington Stanley in the League Two playoffs - a goal that secured a place in the final.

Stats do not include expunged Chester City fixtures in 2009/10.
