Former England youth goalkeeper Ashley Bayes joined Stevenage Borough in the summer of 2008, primarily to replace the outbound Alan Julian as first-choice man between the sticks at Broadhall Way. Bayes arrived at Broadhall Way after standing out as goalkeeper at both Grays Athletic and Crawley Town.

With Football League experience also on his CV, Bayes approached the twilight years of his career with no less enthusiasm and vigour for the game. His fellow players at Boro' would talk of a man who never seemed to have got past 18 years old and he became a man with as vital a presence off the pitch as on.

During his spell with Boro', Chris Day just happened to be in some top form and that made it nigh on impossible for Bayes to reclaim the Number One jersey on anything more than the odd occasion. But his importance to the team transcended the goalposts and the pitch.

In summer 2011, Stevenage announced that Bayes had decided to concentrate on his coaching career and the player moved on to Basingstoke Town in a bid to also further his playing career.

Stats do not include expunged Chester City fixtures in 2009/10.
