Boro' Debut: vs Barrow (A), 15/08/1998
To look at Carl Alford, you would probably be forgiven for thinking that the striker was probably not the most agile nor the most nimble of players to ply his trade on the non-league circuit. However, Alford's deadly eye for goal made him stand out as a prolific marksman whose record at Broadhall Way speaks volumes. Following the departure of Barry Hayles in 1997, there was a gap up top that needed filling and it was to take a season before it would be.
When considering Boro's top strikers of recent seasons, and we are going back to the late 90s here, Alford should rank up there. More than 50 goals in less than 100 appearances - you can do the math. And it was a habitual knack of scoring goals that would continue to affect Boro' in the post-Alford seasons. Having moved onto Yeovil Town, Alford scored a less-than-gracious bicycle kick against Wayne Turner's Boro' in the 2002 FA Trophy Final.
