Graham Westley moved to bring in former Luton Town and Chesterfield goalkeeper Nathan Abbey ahead of the second game of the 2003/04 season. It was a point at which both contracted squad goalkeepers at Boro' were injured. However, it was not the first time Abbey had been seen at Broadhall Way, having trialled under Wayne Turner a couple of years previously.

Abbey brought with him a wealth of Football League experience and was regarded as a good shot-stopper, which is an asset that ought to have served Boro' well. However, a short-term deal meant that Abbey's future was not to be a long one at Boro' and he moved on not too long after arriving. Since his Boro' exploits, the goalkeeper has seen Football League action at a plethora of different clubs - such as Ipswich Town, Burnley and MK Dons.
