Derek Montgomery became manager of a fledgling Stevenage Borough in 1979, the same year the club made the transition from youth to senior status. Montgomery took charge of the club as it competed in the Wallspan Southern Combination League on roped-off pitches at King George V Playing Fields.

The club returned to the town's spiritual footballing home at Broadhall Way and entered the United Counties League pyramid. Montgomery's side were no match for Division One opponents, with Boro' surging to promotion at the first time of asking. The United Counties League Cup was also won.

Life in the Premier Division was a little tougher, with two 12th place finishes in the first two seasons.
