Where does one begin with Paul Fairclough? Having arrived in 1990 to Broadhall Way, he spent a magical eight year spell at the club in which he lifted Boro' from the relative obscurity of the Ryman Division Two North. Successive promotions, barring the 1992/3 season, saw Stevenage Borough in the Vauxhall Conference at the start of the 1994/5, which was only half of Cloughie's achievements. Within two Conference seasons, Boro' were champions of the non-league elite only to be denied promotion to the Football League on account of the ground.

By the time Cloughie was dismissed in 1998, Boro' had failed to recapture their league winning form, only reaching 3rd in following seasons, but Cloughie had guided Boro' to a Fourth Round replay in the FA Cup where defeat to Newcastle United only came about due to a terrible officiating decision crediting Alan Shearer with a goal that never was.

Fairclough returned in 2000 after Steve Wignall left, but his second spell was less spectacular than the first, and he barely lasted 18 months before Phil Wallace sacked him. Cloughie moved onto Barnet as well as England's 'semi-pro' side and has managed to prove successful in both posts, delivering Conference success to Barnet in 2004/5 and Four Nations success to England in 2005.
