The York City we know today were formed in 1922 it seems in the place of a former incarnation of the name which folded in 1917. For the first seven years of their existence they competed in the Midland League, but in 1929 they were elected to the Football League where they remained until their eventual relegation to the Conference in 2004.
During their history, York City have made the FA Cup semi-finals and climbed as high as the old Division Two in the English pyramid. But most of their League lifespan was spent between the bottom two divisions of the Football League. City lost out in the Conference playoffs in 2007, losing to Morecambe in the semi-final, and it has been somewhat of a struggle for the Yorkshire club in their quest to get back into the League.
