Following their relegation from the Football League, the 2004/5 season will rank as a disappointing one for York City after finishing 17th. Unlike Carlisle United who came down with York City, an instant return to the Football League was beyond the Minstermen as they struggled to adjust to Conference life.
During the 2005/6 season, their fortunes improved dramatically and the eventually finishing eighth albeit eleven points off the playoffs. The 2006/7 season saw them push even further, securing a playoff place although they were disappointingly unable to make the final and missed out on promotion. In the following seasons, hopes of returning to the Football League were to be continually denied. Both the 2007/8 and 2008/9 campaigns were disappointing for a sleeping giant; not even a FA Trophy final appearance in 2009 could disguise that. One of the longest-serving residents of the Conference in recent times, York City could face the danger of becoming entrenched between the teams coming down from the Football League and those coming up from below and must surely need to act soon to secure promotion.
