Wycombe Wanderers have now firmly established themselves as a Football League team following promotion from the Conference in 1993; a season in which the club became one of the elite to do the non-league double under the stewardship of manager Martin O'Neill. In the wake of their remarkable promotion from non-league ranks, the club achieved a successive promotion to Division Two the following year and remained in the third flight of English football until 2004.
During their spell in Division Two, the club shot to almost-worldwide fame by reaching the FA Cup semi-final in 2001, narrowing losing out to Liverpool at Villa Park. It was the victory over Leicester City at Filbert Street, led by Lawrie Sanchez and secured by Roy Essandoh that made the headlines in that season. The FA Cup run arguably being the club's highest point, relegation to League Two in 2004 did not spell the end of the good times in cup competitions; the League Cup semi-finals were next against Premier League giants Chelsea in 2007. Mixed fortunes followed - promotion and relegation, but a return to League One was secured under the leadership of Gary Waddock. Select an option from the left for more information about this club |
