To suggest that Workington AFC have seen it all since being formed in 1921 is perhaps stretching the truth a little far, but the club has certainly seen more throughout their history than some of their current contemporaries can boast.
In 1951, the Reds were elected into Football League Division Three North at the expense of Merseyside-based New Brighton AFC and were guided into the top half of the table under the management of Bill Shankly in 1954/5. Unfortunately, the League adventure was not an indefinite one and, despite a three-year stay in Division Three between 1964 and 1967, Workington's League place was handed to Wimbledon in 1977. The failure to be re-elected into League ranks saw the club take up residence in the Northern Premier League for more than 10 years before another relegation followed. A one-year stint in the North West Counties League for the 1998/9 season precipitated the Reds' recovery and in 2005 the club was accepted into Conference North. In 2007, the club was defeated in the promotion playoffs and thus missed out on a shot at promotion to the Blue Square Premier. The fate was to be repeated in 2010; a season that saw Workington narrowly lose to Stevenage in the FA Trophy after a number of wins against higher league opposition.
