When Stevenage Borough arrived into the Vauxhall Conference in 1994, one of the strongest teams competing were Woking. Geoff Chapple's side were consistently vying for the top spot in the division, although it was ultimately to elude them. The 1995/6 season was marked by a ding-dong battle between Woking and Stevenage at the top of the league; a battle which the Hertfordshire club were ultimately to win.
Since then, fortunes have been less impressive. In recent years, Woking have been more accustomed to the bottom end of the league rather than the top, and are yet to regain the dominance that made them a fearful opposition in the mid-1990s. The Surrey club had showed a marked improvement between 2003 and 2005 that saw them ascend out of mid-table mediocrity to a position where they were eyeing up one of the five playoff places. Long-term decline set in which no-one at the club could seem to arrest, and it culminated with the relegation of Woking in 2008/9 to the mirth of some, and the bewilderment of others. The club's bid for an instant return to the Blue Square Premier was thwarted in 2009/10 by Bath City in the Blue Square South playoff final.
