It could have been so different for Tranmere Rovers. Three times during the 1990s, the club reached the Division One playoffs and placed themselves on the home straight - the Premier League within touching distance. But they were to be denied by Swindon Town (1993); Leicester City (1994); and Reading (1995).

From being so tantalisingly close to the top flight for the first time in their history, Rovers fell away during the latter years of the decade and were to be found further and further away from the higher reaches of the table; a Wembley final appearance in the 1999/00 League Cup doing little to appease that.

No doubt hard to live in the shadow of the two giants across the other side of the River Mersey, relegation to Division Two in 2001 made it harder to compete. Further playoff heartbreak in 2005 failed to spark a revival and Tranmere Rovers were left treading water in League One in the following years.
