Torquay United formed in 1921 as the result of a merger between Torquay Town and Babbacombe football clubs. During the 1920sm they competed in the Western League before stepping up to the Football League in 1927. The club spent most of their time in the League between Division Three and Division Four.
Following relegation in 1972, remained in the lower rung of the Football League ladder until 2004. But there were twice scares along the way. In 1987 they would have fallen into the Conference if it weren't for their superior goal difference, while in 1996, they survived again as Stevenage's ground wasn't good enough to see them promoted. In 2004, things looked up - the club went up into League One and were looking skywards. They came back down with a bump, however, in 2005 with relegation - this time due to inferior goal difference. And another relegation followed in 2007 took them into the Blue Square Premier. Their stay was brief, however, returning to the League at the second time of asking through the playoffs. A return to League One in 2011 was only prevented by Stevenage; the Hertfordshire club recording their first win against their Devon counterparts in the playoff final at Old Trafford.
