Off-the-field financial problems forced the former Telford United out of business in 2004 and out of the Conference, despite what was a fairly impressive season for the Shropshire side. However, fans immediately formed AFC Telford United and restored the town's footballing pedigree.
Telford United was arguably one of the most successful non-league clubs during its lifetime - few non-league clubs can boast an FA Cup run that has taken them to the fifth round, before eventually going down to an Everton team at the peak of its game. Three-time FA Trophy winners, the Bucks found the main prize of Football League status elusive. Prior to being known as Telford United, the club was known as Wellington Town - pitting Southern League wits against former a footballing representative of Stevenage.
