Despite a lack of league success in recent seasons, Sutton United will always be remembered as the last non-league club to knock out top flight opposition from the FA Cup when they disposed of Coventry City in the 1988/9 third round, just two seasons after the Sky Blues lifted the trophy. It came a time when the U's had established themselves in the Conference, but the stay wasn't to last and came to an end in 1991.

A brief re-appearance in the Nationwide Conference saw Sutton United compete in the top flight of non-league football in 1999/00, but it was cut as short as is possible without failing to fulfil every fixture, and an immediate return to the Ryman League was the result. Having made the transition into the inaugural Conference South in 2004, the club was reunited with the Ryman League in 2008 after relegation.
