After 14 years in existence, Stourbridge - or Stourbridge Standard as they were originally known - joined the Birmingham and District League in 1890 and enjoyed success within a fairly short space of time. They were forced to wait until 1923/4 to win the competition for the first time.

For nearly half a century - but for the intervention of the Second World War, the Glassboys continued in the Birmingham and District League and the renamed West Midlands (Regional) League before joining the Southern League in 1971. But for a six-year stint in the Midland Alliance between 2000-06, it was to be a relatively stable residence.

Having only previously come up against Stevenage's predecessors in years past, the 2011/2 FA Cup provided the Glassboys and Boro' with their first chance to cross paths. Stourbridge, of the Southern League Premier Division at the time, earned that opportunity after seeing off Plymouth Argyle in the first round to set up a Round Two showdown.
