Who Are... Stockport County FC?
Stockport County can list themselves among the handful of Football League clubs that have been ejected from the FA Cup by Stevenage Borough over the seasons, having rolled over at Broadhall Way in 2003/4 by two goals. The Hatters have been a strong performer in the Football League over the decades, however, and as recently as 2001 found themselves in the second tier of English football before relegation in 2002 placed them in the third tier, and the fourth tier in 2005.
In 2006, the club nearly registered a second successive relegation that would have spelled disaster for the club, finishing perilously close to the trap door leading into the Conference National. The Hatters survived but have encountered financial difficulties in 2008/9, forcing the club to call in the administrators. The future of the club appeared to be safeguarded in June 2009 when the Melrose Consortium looked to acquire County, although it wasn't until June 2010 that the 2015 Consortium wrapped up a deal.
However, new owners give Stockport County a more positive outlook on the future seasons. This is despite relegation from League One, although they will surely be considered among the contenders for promotion even if they cannot eventually make it an instant return. For Boro', it could be one of the tougher away trips over the course of a season but one of those teams that Stevenage have been willing to have a shot at for some years.
