Stevenage FC were formed in 1976 after Stevenage Athletic went out of business leaving the town without a football club. Starting out in the Chilton Youth league, the inaugral Boro' side competed at King George V playing fields before moving into the Wallspan Southern Combination league at intermediate level.

It wasn't until 1980, when the council allowed them to move 'back' to Broadhall Way as tenants, did the club take on senior status and in doing so started a remarkable ascent through the pyramid. It was then the club adopted the Borough suffix.

Promotion after promotion culminated in 1994 when the club joined the Vauxhall Conference, finishing 3rd in their first season. And the journey from the playing fields to Football League was almost complete just a season later, only to be denied as the Broadhall Way ground failed to comply with standards.

Boro' enjoyed well-documented cup runs in the following years, notably taking Newcastle United to a FA Cup 4th Round replay in 1998. But financial issues in the late 1990s however threatened the very existence of the club.

With the arrival of Phil Wallace, however, a future was secured and Boro' grew once more. A first outing in the FA Trophy Final in 2002 ended in a 2-0 defeat to Yeovil Town, while Football League status eluded Boro' yet again in the playoff final in 2005, with Carlisle United edging out the Hertfordshire side 1-0.

And things still look good. FA Trophy success - the club's first major honour - in 2007 set a new benchmark that was repeated in 2009 and nearly again in 2010. However, the disappointment of the latter was more than tempered as the club achieved the ultimate goal of Football League status for the first time.
