After 15 consecutive seasons at the top of the non-league pyramid, establishing themselves as the division's longest-serving residents, Stevenage secured the championship for the second time in their brief history and earned promotion to the Football League. It was a promotion that had been years in the making and some might argue that it was more than a decade later that it ought to have been.

Graham Westley's men were unable to join an elite club of non-league double winners after defeat to Barrow in the FA Trophy; incidentally, the club's third appearance in four years at Wembley. But the vast majority of Boro' fans will no doubt tell you that the Trophy did not matter after promotion was secured. Suddenly, the non-league arena was to become a distant memory in the next chapter of Boro's history.

The Football League had been a long time coming, with authorities denying the club promotion in 1996 due to an inadequate ground. But when the chance came, it was taken with aplomb and Boro' followed an unprecedented season with an unprecedented promotion into League One. The meteoric rise into the Football League was not just a step change for the Hertfordshire club, it was an iconic milestone for a club formed as recent as 1976.
