HISTORY

St Albans City are the club that pays our benefits, apparently. The Saints' reappearance at the top of the non-league tree in 2006 was long-awaited by both fans of the club and of Stevenage, aiming to restore old acquaintances dating back to the Isthmian League days of the early 1990s. It was almost inevitable that bragging rights would be shared as both teams notched up away wins in the 2006/7 season against their Hertfordshire counterparts.

However, St Albans City found the going all too tough in the Conference Premier and were condemned to bottom spot and an instant return to Conference South. The club raised a few eyebrows with Cup runs over the years, but it is fair to say that it has long been surpassed by Hertfordshire rivals Watford, Barnet and Stevenage. The question is whether they can hold off Bishop's Stortford and refrain from sliding down the Herts pecking order.
