Formed in 1918 as Highfield and Camden Tanneries Recreation Club, the club renamed itself as Runcorn the year after and helped to found the Cheshire County League before going onto be one of the prominent non-league teams of the 1980s and early 1990s. After picking up their second Northern Premier League title in 1981, the club was promoted to the Alliance Premier League and found instant success in the 1981/2 season.
However, the election system was in place for Football League entry at that point at the club was refused a second successive promotion. When Stevenage Borough caught the club up in 1994, Runcorn notched up the double against the Hertfordshire club but were humbled the following season as Boro' put 12 goals past them, including one of the largest away wins in Conference history - 8-0 at Canal Street. It was the season Runcorn were relegated, and not long after, trouble set in. In 2000, the club relocated to the Halton Stadium in Widnes and renamed itself accordingly to Runcorn FC Halton. During the 2004/5 season, the club was forced out of the Halton Stadium due to financial difficulties, which increased in severity to a point where fans formed a breakaway club - Runcorn Linnets - in 2006 at which point the original club forwarded.
