Since being one of the founder members of the Division Three North in 1921, Rochdale has been a staple part of the lower rungs of the Football League for the duration. The club hadn't escaped out of the fourth tier of English football since 1974, with two attempts at the League Two playoffs failing to change that.

However, two top six finishes in 2008 and 2009 heralded a change in fortunes (for the better) for Rochdale. The following season, the club achieved its first promotion in a generation and went up to League One. And despite being mooted as a relegation candidate, the performed admirably in finishing 9th in 2010/1.

The 2011/2 season brought Stevenage and Rochdale together for the first time since an FA Cup tie at Broadhall Way, which was won on that occasion by Dale and was notable for the appearance of midfielder Dannie Bulman between the sticks for the hosts. Not exactly history that one expects to repeat itself.
