In 1934, the year of the club's formation, Peterborough United joined the Midland League and established themselves before going onto enjoy a run of five successive titles between 1955 and 1960. It was this run that acted as the pre-cursor to Posh's admittance into the Football League in 1960, replacing Gateshead in the process.
It was a catalyst for the club, as within six years of Football League action, Posh had already stepped up into Division Three (1961), earned an FA Cup Quarter Final appearance (1964/5) and battled through to the League Cup Semi Finals (1965/6). However, that run ended in 1968 when they were found guilty of financial irregularities and awarded a bottom place finish in Division Three rather than the 9th position their results had merited. From then on, it became a tale of promotion and relegation as Peterborough United scaled and dived throughout the League pyramid. Now, however, the club secured financial backing in Darragh MacAnthony, and firm management in the form of Darren Ferguson. It resulted in the club's ascent into the second tier of English football for only the second time in the club's history. Select an option from the left for more information about this club |
